The small county Westmeath village of Ballinacarrigy, also known as Ballnacargy, is best known for its association with the Royal Canal, which opened in 1817, and the nearby Tristernagh Abbey. However, in 1847 it hosted a steeplechase meeting which took place at Rockbrook on a course containing 13 challenging fences. The meeting was held on Wednesday 7th April 1847 and the main race was the Ballinacarrigy Challenge Cup which was dominated by the Eivers family, with Queen of the Scots beating Wild Willy. Later in the day the Silver Mounted Whip was won by Mr Smyth’s Frenzy who beat Bazaar and Miss Lucy, while the Ladies Purse went to Mr J Eivers’s Molly Playfair. There are no further records of racing taking place in the village. |
